Importing Existing Canvas Content to another Canvas Course

Importing existing content in Canvas allows you to reuse materials you have already created in a previous course and would like to use in another Canvas course.

Note: When copying course material from one semester to another, it's important to remove OLD syllabi from the "Files" folder after content has been imported into the new course.

In order to import materials, navigate to the course that you want your materials in on Canvas. On the right-hand side of the home page of your course, click on "Import Existing Content":

Click on the drop down box next to "Content Type" and select "Copy a Canvas Course":

Type in the course you are looking to use materials from and select the course when it pops up below:

You will get a choice to select "All Content" or "Select specific content". Select "All Content" If you want to import an entire course with all the contents. You can unpublish or delete materials you no longer want from the course you are importing to at your discretion. Note: If you choose this option, it's important that you delete OLD syllabi from the course "Files". You can also pre-adjust due dates by checking the box next to "Options" (you can also adjust due dates after the import is complete). Click "import" after selecting "All Content"

By choosing "Select specific content" you will be prompted to choose the specific materials to your course. You can also pre-adjust due dates by checking the box next to "Options" (you can also adjust due dates after the import is complete).After "Select specific content", click "Import":

If you make this selection, you will see the option to "Select Content" appear below. Click on "Select Content" to make your choices:

The materials available to be transferred will appear by category based on what is present in the course:

To import an entire category,  select the checkbox to the left of the category:

To see the materials within the category, click on the arrow to display what is found within that category:

When you are done selecting materials from all of the categories you want, click "Select Content" found in the lower right-hand corner:

You will see your current import is beginning to work by seeing the "Queued" alert under "Current Jobs"

When your import is active, you will see that it is "running":

It will display "completed" when your import has finished:

To see your imported material, navigate back to your home page by clicking on the course name in the upper left hand corner, or clicking on "Home" in the navigation column:

(Arrow 1) You can edit the names, details, and options of the modules or materials by clicking on the three vertical buttons in order to best fit the needs of the course you are teaching. 

(Arrow 2) You can click on the green checkmark to engage "unpublishing" (or hiding) an item from students. A greyed out circle with a slash will appear to show you that it is "unpublished" (hidden).

If you have materials from a different course that you would like to import to your course, you can repeat the above steps as many times as necessary. Please note, the next set of materials will show up at the bottom of the previous imported materials when they are done importing.
