How to upload files larger than 500MB to Canvas

If you have a situation where a file is larger than 500MB, we recommend you use Google Drive to store your file, then you can embed the file in your Canvas Course:

Upload your file to Google Drive: https://drive.google.com/

You can either click and drag your file into the web browser that has a page open to Google Drive, or follow these steps.

 

1. In the upper left corner of the window, click "New"

2. Select "File upload"

3. Select the file you'd like to upload.  Click "Open"

4. After it is uploaded, click on the three vertical dots, select "Share", then "Share" again. Change the general access from "Restricted" to "Anyone with Link", then click "Copy Link":

4. Login to Canvas, and go to the course you'd like to add the content in Google Drive to. 

5. Add the file to the module where you want students to access it.

6. In the dropdown box, select "External URL":

7. Paste the copied link into the box next to URL and name the file next to Page name (Note: This is what students will read on the module page). Finish by clicking "Add Item":

8. You will see the item in your module unpublished:

To publish, click on the grey circle with the slash to turn it to a green check mark.
