Gradebook Settings Overview in Canvas

The Gradebook in Canvas simplifies the process for instructors to effortlessly review and input student grades. Depending on the chosen Grade display type, assignment grades can be observed as points, percentages, completeness, GPA scale, or letter grades.

Only published graded assignments, discussions, quizzes, and surveys appear in the Gradebook. All ungraded assignments are excluded.

Student grades can be viewed in the "grades" category found in the course navigation on the lefthand side of the screen:

A roster of students will be displayed on the side, but you can search for individual students (or assignments) at the top of the page:

By default, grade items will appear in the order the assignments appear on the assignments pages. You can change this in the gradebook settings in the "View Options" section (see steps further down). 

 

You can manually rearrange the gradebook to your liking by clicking and dragging the items:

Gradebook Settings

Under the "Gradebook Settings" instructors can make choices on late policies, grade posting policies, final grade overrides, and view options:

Late Policies: 

Missing Submissions (1): Allows the instructor to automatically apply a grade to a missing submission from a student. It is counted as missing when an assignment passes a due date without a submission from a student. 

 

Late Submission (2): Allows the instructor to apply a defined penalty for submissions past the due date.

When you are done making changes, click on "Apply Settings"

Grade Posting Policy:

Automatically Post Grades (1): By default, grades are set to automatically post as soon as the instructor enters them.

Manually Post Grades (2): Decide when to release grades to students and manually choose to.

If you have changed the setting to manual, make sure to click "Apply Settings":

Advanced

Selecting the checkbox will allow instructors to change a final grade in Canvas.

If you make this selection, be sure to click "Apply Settings":

View Options:

Arrange By (1): Decide what order you would like to view the gradebook in. The default is the order the items appear on the "Assignments" page.

Gradebook order can be manually reorganized as well (see further up in the article. 

Show (2): Select to show or hide the notes column and unpublished assignments (checked by default), split student names from first and last being in one column to two, hide assignment group totals, and hide total and override column.  

Status Color (3): The background of the graded item in the gradebook will change colors depending on the status of the assignment. You can manually change the colors to fit your needs.

Applying Filters

Instructors can apply filters to see specific items in the gradebook.

Sections (1): By default, instructors will see the course section roster view of the gradebook. If instructors have combined course sections, they will see all students. Instructors can filter by section to see only the students in each section that they have merged. 

Modules (2): Instructors can see the grade items found within a specific module in a single view.

Status (3): Instructors can see grade items by Late, Missing, Resubmitted, Dropped, or Excused.

Submissions (4): Instructors can view grade items that have ungraded submissions, have submissions, have no submissions, or have unposted grades.

Start and End Date (5): Instructors can view grade items by manurally choosing a range of dates.
