How to Troubleshoot VPN Issues

Body

If you're having any troubles with VPN access, here are some tips:

1. Forticlient Install Issues

We use FortiClient to grant VPN access. After downloading the install file, when you run it, it begins to download many files from Fortclient's servers. During this process, you may see a message like "contacting servers":

It may seem like it's stuck or just not moving. This could be because their servers are just busy. Just know that you must let this complete. So, you can either just let it go or cancel and try again later.

2. Warning (-14)

If you are getting this warning, verify the VPN is configured correctly. The settings should be:

VPN: SSL-VPN (must be highlighted)
Connection Name: SNC
Description: connection to campus
Remote Gateway: vpn.snc.edu
Customize Port: unchecked (should read 443)
Enable Single Sign On: checked
Use external browser as user-agent for saml user authentication: checked

3. 403 Login error

If you are getting a 404 login error, verify the VPN is configured correctly. The settings should be:

VPN: SSL-VPN (must be highlighted)
Connection Name: SNC
Description: connection to campus
Remote Gateway: vpn.snc.edu
Customize Port: unchecked (should read 443)
Enable Single Sign On: checked
Use external browser as user-agent for saml user authentication: checked

If those are the settings you are using and you are still getting a 404 error, make sure your VPN client is up to date. The latest version can be found at vpn.snc.edu

4. Wrong Computer

The VPN software will only work on a computer owned and managed by the college. If you are on an SNC device and the above steps didn't work to resolve the issue, reach out to the ITS Service Desk.

5. Can't Connect

When troubleshooting access to any on campus resource (Banner, Business Objects, etc), you have to be on the campus network, the quickest way to verify this is to visit the Network Check web page.

This page will tell you if your computer is on the campus network or not. If it is not, then that's the problem. Perhaps the VPN software is not running, or perhaps it was running before but it has since shutdown. Try restarting your computer, then login to VPN again.

6. Network Drives Disappear

If you're on Windows and your network drives go away, run this command by clicking on the Windows icon and then paste this:

\\snc.edu\netlogon\snclogin.bat

7. General Issues

Sometimes you may encounter issues with connectivity where things may have been working but now they're not. Or maybe something just isn't connecting as you expect. This can happen for a number of reasons (for example, if you're working in your browser, then you lose your connection, then you re-establish your connection, then things in your browser aren't working right).

The best and cleanest way to resolve this is to start over by following these steps, in this order:

  1. Restart your computer
  2. Login to the VPN
  3. Visit the Network Check web page and make sure you're on the campus network
  4. Launch your browser (i.e. Chrome) and resume doing what you were doing

Be sure follow the steps in this order.
